Free Beer on International Beer Day: We Celebrate with Brauerei Thalheim

On 7 August it is International Beer Day. And because we believe a day like that should not simply pass unnoticed, there is free beer at Mitzitant. With every main course ordered, a Thalheimer beer on the house – sponsored by Brauerei Thalheim. But let's start from the beginning.

Brauerei Thalheim: Beer brewed from healing water

Behind the Thalheimer there is a story you could hardly make up. The Schlossquelle in Thalheim in Styria is considered the oldest natural healing spring in Austria. Celts and Romans already appreciated the water of this spring more than 2,000 years ago, and as far back as the 16th century the healing water was said to have curative properties. Schloss Sauerbrunn was built in the vicinity of these springs precisely for this reason.

In 2018, Red Bull founder Dieter Mateschitz bought the castle together with its twelve springs and had a state-of-the-art brewery built. The idea: to turn the mineral-rich healing water – which conventional brewing theory considers far too hard to brew with – into a beer. To make this possible, many pieces of equipment had to be specially developed and adapted. The result is today the only beer in the world brewed with healing water.

Brewmaster Koloman Strohmeier

The recipes are the work of Brewmaster Koloman Strohmeier, a true beer enthusiast with years of experience at some of Austria's largest breweries. After years of experimenting with craft beer and everything the hop has to offer, he found his place in Thalheim. Here, work is done according to artisan principles, much still crafted by hand and the recipes constantly refined.

The Thalheimer combines subtle hop bitterness with malty sweetness, and its exceptional water brings an unmistakable character all of its own. A beer for people who want more than just to quench their thirst.
